SUPERVISOR

SIDHI will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the project which interns choose. During your time as an intern, you will be assigned a number of duties which volunteers also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between volunteers and interns). Wherein exists the differences between interning and volunteering is that the internship allows individuals to become more deeply involved in their chosen project.

COLLEGE CREDIT

You can earn academic credit for nearly every type of internship work.  The best way to receive academic credit is through your college/university. Therefore, please contact your respective faculty/academic advisor about receiving college credit for your internship work. Your college/university may need additional information about the program prior to approval, as well as require you to submit a research paper or other requirements.

Requirements

Interns must be reasonably fit and healthy. There is little public transport in the area so you will often need to walk from one location to another. The work will also involve manual labour at times. We need enthusiastic, patient, resourceful and adaptable interns who will cheerfully cope with the unpredictability of working in a developing country and have a go at whatever tasks are required.

Whilst we hope to include occasional visits to other projects or local attractions, the focus is on the work and this is not a holiday camp. The minimum age is 18.

If you have any kind of medical condition, physical impairment or other special needs, you must let us know when you apply so that we can establish whether or not we have the facilities to accommodate you in this remote area with very little infrastructure.

Insurance

You MUST have travel insurance covering cancellation and medical costs. We cannot accept you as an intern without this. We cannot accept any liability for you, it is your responsibility to purchase insurance covering any eventualities.

Visa

You can intern with us on a normal tourist visa (you don’t need a special volunteer visa or working visa, because you are not paid).

How do I apply?

To apply for an internship with us, send your c.v. and a brief explanation of why you want to intern, why you think you would be a good intern and what you expect to gain from the experience. Note any special requirements from your university or college about what your internship must cover. Make sure you tell us the level of your Hindi or English language skills. Internship FAQs:

Can I intern as part of a group?

Groups of interns (with or without professor) are welcome by arrangement. Contact us to design an internship program tailored to your course if you have a group of 4 or more prospective interns.

Will I be paid as a development intern?

No.  We do NOT offer any kind of paid intern job or paid internship, nor can we help with costs for interns.  Please do not write asking for paid work, we only offer unpaid internships for which a contribution is required.

Why should I have to pay for my internship?

Interns develop skills and gain experience, which they then take elsewhere to profit from in their future careers.  We can’t afford to subsidise your costs – and even if we could, we would instead use the money to employ a local person who would stay in the area and use their developing skills and knowledge for the benefit of the projects we work on, which would be far more sustainable.  Intern contributions allow us to provide employment for local people, in an area of extreme poverty where very few jobs are available

What is the difference between the internship program and the volunteer program?

Interns are responsible for their own mini development project.  The internship program includes a one day development workshop each month. The Intern Contribution also covers our time for filling out whatever forms or reports are required by the intern’s university.  Internships are for 4 to 12 weeks; volunteers are accepted for 1 to 8 weeks.

When is the best time to undertake my internship?

Interns are welcome all year round.  Summer internships are particularly popular so you should apply well in advance for the summer months.
